Treasures of the piano trio repertoire are on full display in this evening’s astounding concert of Russian repertoire performed by the Hermitage Piano Trio. Stanchinsky’s Piano Trio D Major opens with unison violin and cello playing a light-hearted and engaging theme, quickly answered by piano and beautifully developed in a single movement. Delicate and charming, and one of only three chamber works by this child prodigy, this piece is packed with counterpoint beautifully delivered across three instruments. Trio No. 1 in C Minor Op. 8, also a single-movement composition, was written by a Shostakovich in response to his first love interest. Likely the most romantic work he ever wrote, the Trio is filled with Shostakovich composition hallmarks – lyrical melodies with acerbic harmonies, sudden shifts of pace, and insistent rhythms. Rachmaninoff was a teenager when he composed Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G Minor in 1892, another single-movement piece with a melancholic, Slavic primary theme introduced by piano to the rhythmic pulses of the violin and cello. This is rich music that engages and satisfies the listener. The evening culminates in Arensky’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor Op. 32, composed in memory of his friend and cellist Karl Davidov, and in which the cello plays a prominent role. Soaring lyricism alternates with forceful, dramatic composition throughout four movements of exciting, celebratory Russian Romanticism.
