The Newport Music Festival is honored to present Grammy-nominated Imani Winds in their Newport debut performance. In addition to gracing the stage at The Breakers, Imani Winds will engage in education and outreach at the Martin Luther King Center for our youngest audiences. Imani Winds opens their Friday night concert, a musical foray into jazz-as-chamber music, with an audience favorite, Red Clay and Mississippi Delta, composed by founding member and group composer, Valerie Coleman. The brilliance and beauty of the ensemble’s playing is experienced in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade with familiar melodies conjuring mystery and romance flooding the senses. The first half concludes with Contrabajissimo, Argentinian tango composer Piazzolla’s enchanting and compelling song. The Poulenc Sextet for Piano and Winds begins the second half of the program with Sara Davis Buechner joining at the piano. Poulenc created intricate melodic lines that move between instruments, developing rich, enveloping layers of sound. Closing out this stellar evening of wind ensemble treasures is Dance Mediterranea by Palestinian-American composer Simon Shaheen. A stunning, dynamic, and inspirational music by a groundbreaking contemporary ensemble.
