On February 23 at 8 p.m. the Orchestra and Chorus of Emmanuel Music, under the direction of Ryan Turner, will present “Metamorphoses: Orpheus in Oedipus” featuring Matthew Aucoin’s “The Orphic Moment,”  John Harbison’s Symphony No. 5 and Igor Stravinsky’s “Oedipus Rex” with the Harvard Glee Club at Sanders Theatre. The performance will mark the 90th anniversary of the American premiere of Stravinsky’s piece that featured the Harvard Glee Club and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. For Emmanuel Music’s performance, WBUR’s Christopher Lydon will narrate, and the Harvard Glee Club will be joined by 12 male members of Emmanuel Music’s chorus.

A pre-concert Composer’s Forum from 6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. will feature Turner, Aucoin, Harbison and John Heiss, moderated by Lydon. For tickets and more information, visit EmmanuelMusic.org.

Aucoin’s “The Orphic Moment” examines the moment before Orpheus turns to look at Eurydice. The performance will feature a choreographed work for solo dancer, Jacob Regan, by Betsi Graves, Director of Urbanity Dance.  In Harbison’s Symphony No. 5, the Orpheus myth is reflected in vivid poetry of Milosz, Glück and Rilke, the eponymous hero’s lute represented by an electric guitar. With a libretto by Cocteau based on Sophocles, Stravinsky’s monumental and chilling opera-oratorio “Oedipus Rex” is a throbbing musical engine of fate.
