The Newport Music Festival is thrilled to present Yekwon Sunwoo, the gold medalist of the 2017 Van Cliburn Competition and the first Korean to win that coveted prize, in his Newport debut. His recital begins with the sumptuous Ramble on the Last Love Duet – Der Rosenkavalier, which was composed by Percy Grainger in tribute to his friend, Richard Strauss. Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in F# Minor, dedicated to Clara Schumann, opens with a stunning exposition demanding virtuoso technique before settling into a romantic theme with two- and three-part variations that are linked throughout the movements. The second half of the evening begins with Four Impromptus D. 935 by Schubert, with their captivating and delightful melodies, pensive yet full of hope and joy. The evening closes with Toccata on “L’homme de armé” by Canadian pianist and composer, Marc-André Hamelin. Commissioned for the 2017 Van Cliburn Competition and required to be played by all 30 competitors, the Toccata is his new treatment of a French Renaissance song. This composition brilliantly showcases technical talent while delivering a breathtaking addition to the contemporary piano repertoire.
